Working at International House Lviv International House Lviv is a member of the International House World Organization, one of the world's leading language teaching organisations, with more than 120 affiliated schools in over 30 countries in the world. The mission of the organization is to promote and improve teaching standards worldwide. In order to achieve this all schools place a strong emphasis on teacher training and professional development, even for experienced teachers. At IH Lviv it is done through DoS mentoring, peer observations, team teaching and regular seminars. Furthermore, all the staff are encouraged and given the opportunity to specialize or to take on new challenges in teaching and/or management. Teachers can opt for teaching Younger Learner classes, exam classes (IELTS - TOEFL) or Business English. If you do not wish to stay on in Lviv after your contract has expired, you can take advantage of the IH-transferal system and get a job in another IH-school in a different country or even on another continent! However, you may find that you do not want to leave our small, cozy and well resourced school opposite the park in "Green Street". Not only are your colleagues (see Our Team) and students your friends and guides around town, you will find that the office staff is more than willing to help you with any queries and they will take care of all the paperwork such as your work permit and residential visa. Another advantage of working at IH-Lviv is that you will have an opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful old cities in the region. The city was founded in the middle ages and you can still see old city walls, visit Renaissance and Baroque churches and cathedrals of different religions, stroll along central Svobody (Freedom) Prospect whose chestnut trees blossom magnificently in spring, or chill out with a cold drink on the historic Rynok square which is surrounded by little cafes and restaurants. Central European in flavour, Lviv is an overnight train journey from Kyiv, Warsaw and Budapest, and approximately 24 hours from Prague and Moscow. Life's cheap for foreigners so you can afford to splash out on eating out, clothes and CDs. There are a few discos and night clubs but generally they do not compare to the ones we know from Western Europe and the States. However, as one of our foreign teachers remarked, "There are some nice restaurants and there's a relatively diverse and vibrant student community". There are students from Middle Eastern and Asian countries plus Peace Corps Volunteers who make for a more varied community. When tired of clubbing you can always visit the famous Lviv Opera House, even if you do not like opera it is worth a visit because of its architecture and decorations. There are a number of museums and classical concerts, you can take music lessons if you like or keep fit through aerobic classes and working out in the gym. In winter there is cheap skiing in the Carpathian mountains. They are very beautiful and this can be a wonderful adventure. The ski bus will take you there and back for a few dollars and for those who enjoy less physical activities, this would be the ideal opportunity to learn Ukrainian or Russian. You can download a brochure for prospective teachers with more details about working and living in Lviv.
